Portugese Sweet Bread

I started thinking about something today....

Portuguese Sweet Bread.

You can't get in Alabama....we are famous for greasy buttery melt in your mouth biscuits. But not Portuguese Sweet Bread.

I remember going to my VoVo's house (great grandmother who was from Portugal) when I was a little girl living in Fall River Massachusetts. She would slice a piece off the loaf for me and my brother and toast it just perfect and then smother it in butter and sugar!!!

I still can remember the smell of her house :)

So, here is a recipe and instead of dousing it with sugar try a little drizzle of Honey!

PORTUGUESE SWEET BREAD
1 c. sugar
1 yeast cake, dissolved in 1/4 c. lukewarm water
4 eggs, well beaten
1 tsp. vanilla
5 1/2 c. flour
1/2 c. butter
1 c. milk
Dissolve butter, sugar, a little salt in 1 cup of scalded hot milk. Cool to lukewarm, then combine all other ingredients. Knead until smooth. Grease 2 loaf pans, let rise in pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour.
